How numbers convert to Chinese

Chinese numbers are built from basic digits and place units. Learn a few rules below and you can read and write most numbers.

Special rules

• Tens 10–19 drop “一”15 → 十五From 100 up it stays: 110 → 一百一十.
• Internal zero reads 零1,001 → 一千零一Consecutive zeros read 零 only once: 100,000,001 → 一亿零一.
• Group by 万 / 亿123,400,000 → 一亿二千三百四十万Chinese groups every 4 digits (万 = 10⁴, 亿 = 10⁸), unlike the familiar 3-digit grouping.
• Negatives add 负-8 → 负八负 (fù) goes at the front.
• Decimals use 点12.5 → 十二点五After 点 (diǎn), read each digit one by one: 0.07 → 零点零七.
• Financial capitals (大写)1,234 → 壹仟贰佰叁拾肆Anti-tampering characters (壹贰叁… 仟萬億) used on invoices, cheques and contracts.

Note: this tool uses 二 (èr) for 2 — e.g. 200 → 二百. Speech sometimes uses 两 (liǎng), e.g. 两百.
